Breaking into the Modeling Biz

December 15, 2011 | [ 0 ]

The glitz, glamour and perks that come with being a model can be all the convincing you may need to want to join the lavish lifestyle. But as fun as it may seem to be on the spotlight 24/7, there are mandatory steps, guidelines and regimens that make this profession a very demanding one. Nonetheless, with a little help here and there, and a nudge in the right direction, your modeling hopes can easily go from a daydream illusion to a dream come true.

Modeling BizStep #1: Types of Modeling
Before you venture into this business, you need to know what type of modeling you’re good at and, most importantly, what type you’re comfortable doing. Fashion runway, editorial, catalog, print and swimsuit modeling are only some of the branches of this career. With each branch having its own specific requirements and guidelines, you’ll want to make sure that you research them as soon as you think you’ve found your modeling niche. Fyi, there is a market for every look, size, height, etc. so forcing yourself to be a size or height that is physically impossible should not be your concern. Research what type of modeling market suits you best and then take a dive into step #2.

Step #2: What it takes
You should know that, as with any other career, modeling requires a lot of hard work and discipline. If you’re a person who dislikes taking orders and who likes setting your own schedule, you will encounter many problems during this first stage of your career. As a model you will have to follow orders from photographers, agents, make-up artists, hairstylists, etc. and photo sessions will not revolve around your schedule. You will have to adapt to last minute changes and keep an organized agenda in order to prove yourself responsible and thus have any chance of being taken seriously. Depending on the type of modeling you take on, a strict diet may need to be followed as well as a beauty regiment and a fitness routine. Having a friendly and outgoing personality is an added bonus that will make your photographer remember you and want to work with you in future projects, so make sure you put your best face and attitude forward, and turn on that charm as soon as you step into any shoot.

Modeling BizStep #3: Network! Network! Network!
Unless a modeling offer were to suddenly fall onto your lap, which you’ll be glad to know that in some cases it does, you’ll have to put yourself out there to get noticed. Attend social mixers, join social networking sites stating your modeling intentions, and consider seeking an agent or joining a modeling agency which will provide coaching and help you put a portfolio together. Get your feet wet by approaching local designers in your area and offer your modeling free of charge. Although you will more than likely not get paid for any of your first shoots, the experience and relationships that you build with designers and photographers alike will help you in the long run. So get yourself out there, introduce yourself to as many people as possible, work diligently to get your name and face known and most importantly, never give up.
