The Secret of a Successful Woman

June 15, 2010 | [ 0 ]

What makes a successful woman? Success is a very  difficult concept to define, as is love, because it’s  subjective. Each person will give it his or her own  meaning. For an actress, success is winning an  Oscar. For an overweight woman, it is losing  weight. For a mountain climber, it’s reaching the top  of Mount Everest, and for a pickpocket success is  stealing wallets without getting caught.

What does success mean to you? Having a good job and earning a lot of money? Finding your prince? Having a beautiful family and living in the home of your dreams?  Being able to give your children the best education? Maybe having a great body and looking like a model is what success means to you.

We tend to associate our success with what we’ve achieved or accumulated. If we have a big house, drive a fancy car, own expensive jewelry, or have received several trophies or awards, then we feel we are worth a lot and are, therefore, SUCCESSFUL!

It’s normal to wish for all of those things. Part of being human is wanting to be better, wanting more out of life – whether it’s more money, health, love, wisdom, fame or beauty.

A word of caution: defining your success in life by your achievements or how many material possessions you own is the easiest way to lower your self-esteem and feel like a failure.

There are many women we would consider “successful” that wouldn’t necessarily look at themselves the same way.  One example is the actress Marilyn Monroe, who was very beautiful, rich and famous in her lifetime. She had everything, but still ended up committing suicide. What would make a woman with wealth, fame and beauty feel like a failure while a woman like Mother Teresa felt victorious?

There is a universal principle professed by many religious leaders and spiritual teachers from around the world that states, “The purpose of life is to achieve spiritual growth.” Note that it does NOT say that your purpose is to accumulate things, earn a lot of money or travel the world before you die.

So if you have a hard day at work or at home, and you are more understanding and loving to someone instead of acting impatient, then it is a successful day for you because you grew spiritually. If you took some personal time and put yourself first, then it was a magnificent day because you grew as a woman.

Start to measure your success by what you learn each day and how much you grow as a human being. Once you do, you will begin to feel fulfilled. If today you show more compassion for another… if today you make a difference in somebody’s life… be assured that you ARE a successful woman!
